Erectile Dysfunction In Diabetics

Erectile dysfunction can be a worrisome and stressful health condition for any man, but for the diabetic, it may also be a warning sign of other health problems. Studies have shown that diabetic men suffering from erectile dysfunction are more likely to also have problems with blood pressure and heart disease. In fact, these conditions are all interrelated.

The physiological process that creates an erection has to do with blood flow. Increased blood flow to the penis causes the erection, and when this quantity of blood leaves the penis, the erection is lost. If there are problems with achieving or maintaining an erection, this can be a clear sign of problems with the blood flow.

Diabetics have to monitor their blood sugar levels because high blood sugar will cause their blood to thicken. This thickening slows down circulation and increases blood pressure. Over time, this whole process is very hard on the heart and can contribute to heart disease. Poor control of blood sugar, lack of physical activity, being overweight, and eating a poor diet over a long time period can all contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and numerous other health problems.

Erectile dysfunction may, in fact, be one of the first signs that there are problems with your overall health. For this reason, it is important to mention erectile dysfunction to your doctor. Your doctor will be able to help you find an appropriate treatment plan, as well as screen you for circulatory and heart problems that the erectile dysfunction may indicate. Gone are the days when men did not reveal their erectile dysfunction to their doctors. Now that there are many successful treatments available, it would be a shame not to inform your medical provider. The possible heads-up that something is wrong with circulation is also important.

It is important to note that diabetes and circulation problems are not the only causes of erectile dysfunction, even in diabetics. Stress, lack of sleep, or relationship problems can be at the root of Erectile Dysfunction as well. Your doctor will help you to determine the cause, and in this way, also determine appropriate treatment.

Most men find that regular physical activity and a heart-healthy lifestyle improve erections. Overall health of the circulatory and cardiovascular systems is mirrored in this aspect. Erections are merely a more noticeable measure of cardiovascular health. Remember that blood vessels all over your body are also subject to the same slowed or normal blood flow. This is just one more good reason to get active and control your blood sugar!
